LAND ROVER DEFENDER
R161 CDU
1998 Tierra del Fuego: Portuguese team support vehicle (Chile/Argentina)
(photo available)
Build date: 09 01 98
Present ownership: One owner post Land Rover from 2000.

PROVENANCE & HISTORY:
This vehicle was one of the last - maybe the very last - to be sold by Land Rover directly to current private owner; no intermediates. Acquisition was via David Fulker, then Head of P.R. Programmes on a personal basis. There had been eight remaining (of the 61 Defenders that year) others going via the Royal Geographic Society. It remained under maker's warranty until 07 05 01; work done by Land Rover and Gordon Lamb (Chesterfield).
USE:
Personal training and expedition vehicle (Land Rover & B.O.R.D.A. qualified). Expedition support vehicle with Atlas Overland. This vehicle holds a very high profile, featuring extensively in shows, magazines, photography & video.
REASON FOR SALE:
After ten years of exemplary service, it now seems time - around 96,000 miles - to gracefully pass the vehicle to a good home where it will be appreciated rather than via any speculative intermediary. Nevertheless, Paul Marsh (Footloose 4x4) is of the opinion that - properly maintained - it will give full service for another ten years.
INTENTION:
Current intention is to sell 'as is' with everything done over the years (excluding tent & awning). This will include full length 'Mobile Systems' storage drawers and chest. The Engel fridge may be negotiable separately. A substantial/valuable expedition service pack of new parts (as well as used spares and 'Camel' items) will be included.
MODIFICATION:
Intention has been throughout to maintain originality whilst maintaining/updating on a 'fit for purpose' basis (as below). Land Rover/Camel sponsorship closure required remove of identifying decals. The door decals only have been re-created. The roof rack was renewed to pattern by Brownchurch (the original bike rack being otherwise useless). The four Bosch roof lamps will be included on bracket and can be remounted or new bracket supplied by Brownchurch. Radio has been replaced with Sony +CD and Pioneer speakers to pattern. Virtually all lamps (including instruments) have been replaced by LED. Xenon discharge high-voltage headlamp system on IPF reflectors. Heated front and rear screens.
MAINTENANCE:
There is full, total and intact documented service history. Apart from original factory work by Land Rover and some early service work by John Milner (Worksop), there has been main dealer maintenance throughout (and storage) by Gordon Lamb Land Rover (Chesterfield); regardless of cost or need and has been extravagant for reason of reliability. Apart from Defender 'quirks', the vehicle has never failed its purpose. A new transfer box (Ashcroft) has just been fitted.
RENEWAL & ADAPTATION:
Over time, the entire post-engine drive train (except Salisbury axles) has been renewed: clutch (including hydraulics), gearbox, transfer box, prop shafts, swivels, cv joints and half shafts (Ashcroft rear end caps). Also, drive belts, tensioners, oil hoses, seals, steering pump & joints. Many sundry items have been renewed on precautionary basis. Suspension and steering damper renewed as Old Man Emu with double rear shock absorbers. The vehicle was examined and re-bushed in 2010 by Footloose 4x4 (some £2000 renewal/maintenance). Intercooler has been upgraded (size for size) as also expansion tank/hoses by Allisport. E.G.R. blanked off but retained. Batteries are dual Exide Maxima on proper mounting tray. Steel winch cables retained but synthetic currently fitted.

COMPLETENESS:
Within forgoing limits, the vehicle retains good original status with underbody plates, secondary fuel tank/change-over, Safety Devices full cage, fire extinguishers, battery cut-off, volt meter, centre switch panel + sockets, oil breathers, original wheels (including bonnet spare), spare tie bar, spare winch cable, Hi-Lift, wheel chocks, A-bar towing system, pick and spade - all as provided for the event.
SECURITY:
Locks have been renewed; Thatcham 'Toad' immobiliser/alarm fitted; also Tracker.
ATTESTATION:
The following will attest to their knowledge of this vehicle; Brian Lyne; Service Manager, Gordon Lamb, Chesterfield; Paul Marsh; Footloose 4x4; Peter Girling; Atlas Overland; Wayne Mitchelson; freelance photographer & ex Camel support.
